A U.S. Army officer looking for test subjects offers a soldier Steve Rogers the chance to serve his country by taking part in a top-secret defense project — Operation: Rebirth, which seeks to develop a means of creating physically superior soldiers. Rogers volunteers for the research and, after a rigorous selection process, is chosen as the first human test subject for the Super-Soldier serum developed by the scientist "Dr. Josef Reinstein".

The night Operation: Rebirth is implemented, Rogers receives injections and oral doses of the Super-Soldier formula. He is then exposed to a controlled burst of "Vita-Rays" that activate and stabilize the chemicals in his system. Although the process is arduous physically, it successfully alters his physiology almost instantly from its relatively frail form to the maximum of human efficiency, greatly enhancing his musculature and reflexes. Erskine declares Rogers to be the first of a new breed of man, a "nearly perfect human being." At that moment, a Nazi spy reveals himself and shoots Erskine. Because the scientist had committed the crucial portions of the Super-Soldier formula to memory, it cannot be duplicated.

HOWEVER, the real truth was, that before all these happened, there was actually an initial top-secret defense project called Operation: Birth. A test subject by the name of Leo Nel was the real first person to have the Super Soldier serum tested on a human being.

Dr. Josef Reinstein, the creator of the serum, was unsure that he serum was safe to be used on a human being, hence men were sent to kidnap a boy, by the name of Leo, to be used as a test subject. The results of the experiment turned out well, and he recieved the same abilities as Captain America. However, this initial Super Soldier serum had two flaws, it caused its test subject to be unable to retain its previous memories, and gave the test subject demon-like wings, which could be concealed at will. This led to Leo being very angry and frustrated, and he killed many of the guards and scientists in the military based the lab was in, in an attempt to escape. However, he was shot from the back, by a tranquiliser dart, and put into a deep sleep, or hibernation in the labs.

This incident was made sure it was so well covered up, that no one knew anything of it. One day, many many years later, the military base was attacked by enemy troops, and the remaining military units and scientists fled. The attack caused a power failure, hence waking Leo from his sleep in the labs. Breaking out of the glass chamber he was in, he actually managed to fight his way out of the military base, only to find that the world outside now was so much different from what he had perviously live in.

Leo waited under cover until all the enemies left the base, before serching through the weapons lab for something he could use to protect himself from potential dangers. Well, he managed to find a giant Buster Sword made of adamantium. Till this day, the sword has been his main weapon used in battles.
