Personality:He has shown his bravery on many occasions, but has also been shown to be sneaky, observant, patient, cunning and willing to pick and choose his battles if possible, even if it means looking weak, afraid, trapped, or hesitant. He uses these deceptions in order to have his foe underestimate him or to wait for the best chance to strike, as well as trying to anger his opponent in order to get them to make a mistake.

Despite this Dirge can also be emotional and reckless in battle if someone or something he cares for is in danger or he is pushed too far. This extends beyond battle, and his best and worst accomplishments have come when he has lost his cool and let his emotions override his instincts, risking all and not giving a damn about the consequences.

Dirge is a gambler to the very bone and weighs the risks based on what there is to be gained or lost. He will gamble everything for those he cares about since he is strongly loyal and protective of those who he considers his family and friends, no matter how they treat him.

He lives for the excitement and thrill of the game, the adrenaline rush, loves the company of interesting women, and is an accomplished flirt. Despite his flirtations though, he is extremely loyal to the woman who he considers his.

Dirge is also a consummate people watcher, observing personalities and habits possibly as a direct consequence of his training as a thief.

Because of his less than virtuous past, he sometimes feels inadequate as a person in comparison to those around him, despite the fact that they too might not have always walked on 'the side of Angels', and is constantly trying to earn his place and find his redemption.


History:

Abandoned at birth due to his burning red eyes, the child who would one day become Robert Lord was kidnapped from his hospital ward by members of the New Orleans Thieves' Guild who referred to the child as "le diable blanc" - the white devil. They believed he was the child that had been prophesied to unite the warring Guilds. Soon after, Robert was placed in the care of a gang of street thieves who raised the child and taught him the ways of thievery. Later, when he was around ten years old, Robert attempted to pick the pocket of Bobby Lord, then-patriarch of the Thieves’ Guild. Bobby took the boy in off the streets and adopted him into his own family. As part of a peace pact between the Thieves’ Guild and their rivals, the Assassin’s Guild, a marriage was arranged between Robert and Bella Beau, the granddaughter of the head of the Assassin's Guild. However, Bella's brother Joseph objected to the marriage and challenged Robert to a duel. Robert killed Joseph in self-defense, but was excommunicated and banished from New Orleans in an attempt to maintain the nonaggression pact between the two guilds Robert wandered the world as he plied his skills as a master thief, aided by his mutant power to charge objects with explosive energy. He employed playing cards he charged with kinetic energy as his trademark weapon.
